Ladies and gentlemen, meet John King, an artist known for his comics series “Fruit Gone Bad.” He turns ordinary fruits, vegetables and other food into vibrant and mischievous characters, each uniquely flavourful in a one-panel comic.
His secret ingredient, if you will, is taking life’s little amusing moments and making even the most ordinary situations extraordinary, all while making you laugh just that much harder. Be it bananas on skateboards, oranges dealing with some existential crisis, or watermelon thinking they are “pieces of meat” (“Fruit,” n.d.). Fortunately, we had the chance to ask John King a few new questions. “I guess I’ve always thought that the world needs a bit more laughter, now more than ever,” King said when I asked him about his inspiration and sense of humor. “Humor isn’t very hard to find, it’s right there in front of you. Just looking at everything, a playful fruit or the night sky, always gave me an idea. I hope nothing struck an innocence.

Adding in their own different personalities, facial expressions, and dialogue, it’s like we’re making a life where we usually just see things to buy. And they sure do add their charm, don’t they? Nature’s little comedians, I’d say.” “The hardest part is trying to come up with a visual of what’s going on in the scene is what’s so difficult, putting the perfect words down is a challenge”. King said of the actual comic creation process”. If you scroll down my Instagram long enough, you’ll be able to tell. I make the limbs a lot shorter. My coloring is bolder. My comics are more risqué nowadays. “I’m a bit behind in new technology to make comics, but they are mostly drawn using the computer these days,” King admitted of his commitment to his style. “I’m pretty old-fashioned. I still draw with pencil and ink. I color it with colored pencils and then touch it up in Photoshop. Politics. Whew, that’s a fun one. It’s in everything lately, isn’t it? It won’t be in my comics. I want people to smile, not to be mad!”
