Jakarta-based comic artist, Alvin Juano whose weekly series “The Square Comics” has won the hearts of over 611,000 Instagram followers. With a dark sense of humor and unexpected plot twists common in his work, Alvin portrays square characters and illustrated animals with voices that take one on an exploration through the trials within life. Especially his dark humor comics with a large following due to their unexpected backhanders.
The comics Alvin creates are deceptively simple, staring back at us on the page and laughing while Alvin is able to work through topics like trauma or our societal expectations. We caught up with Alvin recently to talk about how he creates, and where his ideas form. In addition to his personal experiences, Alvin also gets inspired by observing people during his walks and café visits. “I often get ideas randomly. Recording them in a notebook or on my phone is important,” he said. This method is what helps him set up humorous, dark comic strips.

Alvin, like many creatives, gets writer’s block and faces other obstacles. He describes how this usually occurs when he is straining to turn an idea into a reality or has reached burnout. “Work in progress for me, but I often tend to take a break and come back sketching afterward,” Alvin said. This is why he can keep creating ominous humor comics and sad twist ending comics.

The Round Table: What is it like to write and release “The Square Comics” Alvin said his normal arrangement more often than excludes a glass of rye, some paper and a pencil. I usually try to get a few quick roughs onto paper don’t spend more than an hour or two on them then go with the ones that work,” he said That process improves his ability to create dark humor comic strips.
