This artist, Drawtism, living on the border between England and Wales, UK described his work as “illustrations to disturb the comfortable or comfort the disturbed.” Well, however you want to call them funny, lowbrow or nonsensical-he is perfectly fine with any of those labels. For him, it’s all about how get people away from mundane parts of their daily life through humor jokes and light-hearted art.

Although officially a qualified engineer with no form of formal education in art, Drawtism has produced his unique visual style and is on the radar of the world of humor comics online. His storytelling is often droll, blunt, and a little surreal. “I think it’s possibly a British sense of humor,” he said, musing over the origins of his no-nonsense attitude. “A lot of people find comfort in wholesome content, and I do too!” he added, sharing that he’s also a fan of artists like Liz Climo, Adamtots, and Coolman CoffeeDan, who make some of the best humor comics today.

Drawtism often draws on sensitive topics in his work, and it’s got him his fair share of snappy DMs. He says people tend to get offended rather easily than they should. “This is not to say one shouldn’t be appropriately offended by violent abuse, racism, or animal and child abuse, he clarified. “But often, people mistake ‘disliking’ or ‘disagreeing’ with something as ‘being offended,’ and they put more stock on their opinions than on facts,” he added.

He referenced Ricky Gervais’ own joke about ‘guitar lessons’ to extend his explanation. “If you don’t like something, then it probably wasn’t made for your enjoyment. Just move past it and let others have their opinions.” While his work may be offensive to some, others expect and enjoy his hilarious comic strips. “Some follow me for that reason and others will block me for it. But they say the truest form of art creates debate, and my work does that positively or negatively.”

The journey of Drawtism into humor art drawing began in 2018 after his severe motorcycle accident left him hospitalized for almost five months. To keep himself engaged through that period, he started doodling on his iPad. “Fast forward 12 months, I saw some execrable portraits on social media and thought, ‘I could do that,’ as a joke. So, I posted a really badly drawn picture of a dog on the local sales page, and it got lots of laughs before the mods took it down.”

Frustrated by the removal, he made his own page to keep sharing his humor art ideas, and the rest is history. “Now, my art has been shared by e-zines, global businesses, and even celebrities! The reception has been humbling. I just hope I can do this full-time one day. Fingers crossed.”
