We recently had a chat with Chuck Ingwersen to learn more about “Captain Scratchy.” We asked him about how he came up with the awesome characters that fit so well into the series’ vibe. Chuck explained, “In the world of Captain Scratchy, it’s all about talking animals who like to mix it up with humans, usually coming out on top. I like to keep things light with cute animal characters to balance out the dark humor in my comics. Take Kevin, for example, a lovable bear who’s got a weird thing for mauling people but does it in the most charming and creative ways!”

When we asked Chuck about his favorite storyline from “Captain Scratchy,” he had this to say, “A while back, I came up with this unlikely friendship between a great white shark and a manatee in one of my comics, and it’s been a blast to explore. Manatees are gentle giants, so seeing one buddy up with a perpetually hungry shark leads to some pretty wild twists. And of course, I always have fun writing about Kevin (the bear). He’s always up to no good, but there’s something about his struggles that resonates with readers. Plus, his interactions with the main shark character add a whole new layer of excitement.”

We also wanted to know about Chuck’s influences when it comes to comedy. He told us, “Gary Larson’s ‘The Far Side’ was a game-changer for me. The way Larson brought quirky animals to life, even when they were up to no good, really inspired me and my dark and absurdist sense of humor. And let’s not forget about B. Kliban, the master of cat cartoons. His offbeat humor left its mark and probably had a big influence on Larson too.”

Finally, we talked about why humor is such a powerful tool for storytelling. Chuck said, “Laughter is just as essential as breathing, in my opinion. It’s good for the soul and can even help relieve stress. But beyond that, humor lets us shine a light on the human experience in a way that nothing else can. Whether it’s silly, insightful, or just plain weird, humor has a way of connecting with people and making them see the world in a whole new light.”
