When it comes to dark humor comics, the mastermind is Salt Lake City, UT-based Ryan Hudson who comes up with Channelate a compilation of short jokes, dark humor comics, and rib-tickling comic strips that are altogether quite absurd, hilarious, and a little twisted.
Over a decade ago, Ryan started his venture into the world of dark humor with Channelate. It first saw light as short jokes in 3-4 panel comics but has lately evolved to dark humor comics online in animated shorts on YouTube. His work catches the attention of people who love edgy and unexpected comedy. So how did it all start?

“When my family first got the internet in the late 90’s, I chanced upon JoeCartoon.com. It was just this huge collection of flash cartoons,” says Ryan. “And that’s when I knew I wanted to be a web cartoonist. But I had no idea where to start, even. So, when I started posting my comics, I looked up to the Perry Bible Fellowship, Thingpart, and Cyanide & Happiness -all such fantastic examples of dark humor comedians using comics to entertain.”
Ryan’s style is deceptively simple; however, his dark humor comics with unexpected endings are far from it. His work really taps into the darker, cynical side of humor and sends the reader those uncontrollable, snort-laughing moments. Humor is much like South Park—raw, edgy, and always pushing boundaries.

“I have been hugely influenced by South Park, says Ryan. “Trey Parker and Matt Stone really hammered into my sense of humor. I loved The Simpsons, but when South Park came out, it was like nothing else that existed in the world. That dark, edgy humor really connected with me.”

Still fairly straight-faced, animating Channelate was a new experience for him as he went on creating dark humor comics online.
“I do all my comics and animations in Adobe Animate CC (Flash) on a Wacom Cintiq,” Ryan explains. “I do it this way: First, from a sketch. Then ink it over, color it in Manga Studio 5. My first work done in manga style was actually in Manga Studio; however, due to having to learn Flash for a job, I quickly picked it up and started using it as well with my comics.”

Although Ryan does not currently derive a full-time income from Channelate, the comic opened thousands of doors in the creative world for him.
