Life is all about balance – appreciating the lows makes the highs even better, and vice versa. This idea is beautifully depicted in the comics of Optipess, where optimism and pessimism coexist.

Optipess, created by Norwegian artist Kristian Nygård, originally aimed to illustrate the struggles of people dealing with depression. Since its launch in 2008, the project has churned out numerous entertaining comic strips.

Kristian shared, “It usually takes about 3-4 hours to finish a comic, spread throughout a day or several days. I like to let it sit for a while to make final adjustments with fresh eyes, but that’s not always possible.”

Kristian’s workflow involves using his iPad and Wacom tablet for sketching, with most sketches done on the iPad. He primarily works with Clip Studio Paint, occasionally using Photoshop or Procreate.

For inspiration, Kristian said, “I want comic ideas to come naturally, often triggered by unrelated reading or observations. If I’m stuck, I brainstorm ideas on my iPad or challenge myself to create a comic based on a song name from my shuffled music library.”
