Bonnie Pang has turned her unique relationship with her husband, an IT professional, into the most popular comic series titled “IT Guy & Art Girl.” For the past few months, after completing her previous webcomic, Bonnie wanted to represent those comics and heartfelt times she shared with her husband working as a software engineer. The result? A hit comic series with over 278,000 followers on Instagram alone who have grown to love the exact mix of humor and sincerity in the mundane of this couple’s daily life.
Bonnie could translate the contrasts in both careers into exciting stories that lifted the hearts of readers. Her comics show a careless look at her life, and in every respect so relatable for those who are in relationships too.

Having just finished her previous webcomic “Roar Street Journal,” Bonnie was ready for something new. She reflected on what motivated her and explained, “When ‘Roar Street Journal’ ended, I wanted to create something new. Since I was in a relationship, I thought of making a comic that reflects the daily life of my boyfriend, now husband, and me. It would be a way to amuse readers and keep a record of all the funny moments we have gone through. Our careers are very dissimilar; I’m an artist, and he was an engineer in software, so that can be an interesting contrast. That’s how ‘IT Guy & Art Girl’ was born.”

Bonnie usually finds the inspiration for the comics from daily interaction with her husband. While her husband does not strictly work with her, he occasionally points out certain moments that he feels deserve to be a comic. I pick out the moments that made us laugh or made us feel something deeply. I reflect on what might be relatable to the readers, funny and touching, or both. It often does no more than contrast artist and IT worker. I include memory events in life, like getting married, winning an award, taking a trip, or other life events. Since adopting the cat, there are pets in my comics just as regularly.

The readers’ response has been overwhelmingly good. “Everybody loves seeing new comics, especially since they’re free to read!” Bonnie said. “I’ve been traveling a lot this past year, and some readers are particularly excited about comics inspired by my trips. I have an internationally located fan base, and thus, while sharing experiences from different countries, engaging conversations in the comments gets sparked. They love hearing about places I visit and food I try, and they often give me local recommendations!”

Bonnie also values the personal connections her comics create. “I often get replies from fans who said they can relate to my comics, especially those who are also in relationships between an IT person and an art person. And I am like, ‘Wow, they are just like us!’ ” She added, “When I shared my travels in Italy, many Italian fans sent me tips on where to go and what to eat. Following their advice made my trip even better, and these kinds of moments make me feel connected with my fans—not just online but also in real life.
