Some of the funniest comic ideas do not need superheroes, elaborate worlds or long story arcs. Sometimes, all it takes is an awkward conversation and one badly timed response.
That is the territory of Just Jon, the comic series created by writer Jon Fortenbury. According to the series’ official website, Just Jon launched in May 2018 and follows a man dealing with dating, social situations, basic mechanical tasks and the general frustrations of everyday life.

Rather than building jokes around complicated plots, Just Jon often starts with a situation that feels familiar: a strange conversation, an uncomfortable social exchange, a misunderstanding or a seemingly harmless comment. The humor then comes from pushing that situation one step further than the reader expects.

A reader may recognize the setup immediately. Someone is taking a conversation too literally. Another person refuses to acknowledge an obvious social cue. A supposedly normal interaction becomes increasingly uncomfortable.
Then the punchline changes the meaning of what came before.

That structure gives the comics their distinctive rhythm. The artwork does not need to carry every joke because the dialogue and timing do much of the work.
Not every Just Jon joke stays completely light.
Some comic strips introduce darker ideas or uncomfortable twists, but the series frequently places those ideas inside familiar situations. That contrast makes the punchline more surprising.

A 2026 analysis of one Just Jon strip, for example, examined how the comic uses misdirection and philosophical humor before arriving at a darker conclusion.
That range is important. Just Jon is not limited to simple observational humor. Its format can accommodate absurdity, wordplay, dark comedy and character-based situations without requiring a major change in presentation.
